Especially outside of hip hop, a record should open with an announcement. So something along the lines of, "Who am I!", "Where have I been!" or "Yo, how badly do my new songs bang away all the placeholder artists who've been sneaking up on the throne from behind!" All with exclamation marks instead of question marks, of course. The opener of Thees Uhlmann's third solo record is such a description of state. He says what is the matter. Namely: "Five years of not singing." Junkies & Scientologists" tells of a phase of upheaval and change. This touching aloofness is exactly what listeners are looking for in Thees Uhlmann.
